Artist Statement

We are connected to the earth around us and its magnificent beauty never ceases to amaze me. Drawing and painting has been my passion for fifty years. It started in New York where I received my education and then I lived and worked in the US Virgin Islands for six years, painted in Puerto Rico, Florida and now Israel.

Through my art gallery on St. John, I sold many oil paintings to patrons from all over the world. My inspiration was the rhythms of the lush tropical landscape, sky and climate. I saw how the shapes in nature duplicated those of the female figure and incorporated them into my landscapes.

The flat bright colors acrylic paints create inspire me now. My canvases are larger and I use gels to add visually intriguing textural backgrounds to the landscapes. They have created another layer to the experience of applying materials to canvas.

The Impressionist painters’ focus on the subtleties of light and color rather than the objects inspires me the most in my own use of color. I also love the way the Renaissance artists used perspective and subtle changes in color to draw the viewer into a scene. The importance of controlling the viewer’s eye movement through the painting with composition was a lesson I learned from the Neoclassicists and Romanticists.

The amazing energy, history and beauty of Israel's landscape are my inspiration now. My paintings reflect my connection to the country that defies logic and my desire to express its many facets hasn't waned.

I’ve taught art to all age groups in schools and privately. Now, I have lived in Israel a few years and am now navigating a Covid surreal experience with the rest of humanity and painting in Nahariya, Israel. I hope you enjoy my work and can experience some of the joy that I did by what you see.
